All publishers are looking for ways to increase their adsense earnings. The simple idea is to get more clicks and higher cpc per click and your earnings go up.

Improve CTR

CTR or click through rate is the number of clicks that take place every 1000 impressions. So more clicks.

Add Google custom search

Direct ad units are not the only way to generate revenue from adsense. The next important adsense product is the custom search engine. It integrates google search engine inside your blog which the users can use. Check the search box on top right of this page. It is a custom search engine box. Blogs and most sites provide search functionality to their users.

If the default search result pages do no display the same quantity of ads like the post pages for example, then it is a good idea to use the google custom search for adsense, as it will have ads in it that would generate revenue when clicked.

Turn low ctr units into only image ads

Adsense allows to place upto 3 units per page. For example the first ad could be in the header, next in the sidebar and so on. All the units do not have the same level of ctr. In most cases the ads that are placed within the main content and above the fold have a much higher ctr than those placed in the sidebar or at the end of the content for example.

For example here we have a large square in the content and a medium square in the sidebar and a horizontal unit at the end of the post. The large square in the post receives the highest ctr and is much higher than the rest of the units. This is mainly because the other units have a greater chance of being ignored. So the lesser ctr units can be made into only image ads. This will help in 2 ways.

Protect against smart pricing

Try not to "generate" clicks by any sort of mis guiding. If a site generates useless clicks for a long time, the smart pricing thing of adsense will reduce the average cpc levels for this.

I am not exactly sure to what extent this works, but I to seen this effect in my own account.

Make sure relevant ads are displaying

Often it happens that adsense is showing ads that are not relevant to the topic of the website. This can happen due to a number of reasons, but the main ones are :

Increase pageviews, reduce bounce rate, increase time on site

The most basic tip to increase of adsense earning is to get more traffic. But there is something easier to it. How about increasing the pageviews at the same level of visitor count. If the pageviews can be increased, the average time on site increases, and the bounce rate comes down. So at a given average CTR level, higher pageviews would mean more clicks.

To get more traffic requires producing more content and is the ultimate goal and not a tip. But getting more pageviews requires more of strategy and optimisations and is easier.
